The Italians Mahmood and BLANCO share their emotions and offer us ‘Brividi’
There’s always more than a little pressure when you’re representing your country in the Eurovision Song Contest, and even more when you’re the host country. But despite performing in front of a home crowd, Italians Mahmood and BLANCO are undeterred.
Even though Mahmood returns to the contest after an impressive second place finish at Eurovision in Tel Aviv three years ago, he sees the 2022 event as a fresh start.
I’m super happy to be here again. It’s a great opportunity to bring my story to a big stage. In 2019, I was just telling my own story as a kid. With ‘Brividi’, it’s a different story. You can say different things in a different way. It’s a whole new experience to sing with him, and I learn something from him every time we sing.

their song Chills may seem like a classic romantic ballad at first glance, but rather than just being a traditional duet, Mahmood explains that the song is more about expressing an emotion in general rather than a specific love.
They are two different generations, with the same fears of exposing your feelings to someone you love. It’s okay to be vulnerable and to be masculine. It must be a more common and natural thing now to just spread love. That’s life. I have a lot of family and friends who are afraid to expose their feelings and I think we wrote the song because we’re not so afraid to be honest with ourselves anymore. Love is to be free, anyway. The power of the song is freedom, and I think ‘Brividi’ isn’t exactly about the kind of love we’re dealing with, it’s about losing the fear of facing someone you love and exposing your emotions.
Following their shared victory at the Sanremo Festival in February, Mahmood and BLANCO embarked on extremely successful tours through Italy and other neighboring European countries. Fortunately, they were able to adjust their schedules to participate in Eurovision this year. After two years of quarantines and canceled shows, the two are excited to hit the road and meet their fans. WHITE said:
It’s so cool to be on stage again, after two years of COVID lockdown, and performing in front of a live audience.
So what kind of advice did Mahmood share with BLANCO on what to expect at Eurovision? Surprisingly, not too much!
For me, the most important thing is not so much the competition, but to put all my energy and my passion into a performance. I hope, with BLANCO, to stay free and enjoy the moment. And when it comes to advice, he’s good at what he does! What advice could I give him?
Be sure to tune in to the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 Grand Final on Saturday 14 May.
