Simu Liu slams Quentin Tarantino after director laments ‘Hollywood’s Marvelisation’ | Marvel

director Quentin Tarantino Marvel criticized the film, saying that the studio does not produce movie stars and that Marvel films are “just things that seem to be made”, leading to a response from Marvel star Simu Liu.

speaking on 2 Bears, 1 Cave PodcastTarantino says that the decline in movie stars is responsible for the “surprise of Hollywood”.

“You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. But they are not movie stars. right? Captain America star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think it’s been said a thousand times … but it’s like, you know, these franchise characters are the stars.”

Tarantino said when he “doesn’t hate” Marvel movies, he dislikes their current ubiquity.

“Look, when I was a kid I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy,” he said. “There’s an aspect that if these movies had come out when I was in my twenties, I would have been perfectly happy and absolutely loved them. I mean, they won’t be the only movies. They will be those movies among other movies. But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not that excited about them.

“My only ax to grind against them is that they’re the only thing that seems to be built,” he added. “And those are the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement among fans or even for studios to produce They are excited about it. And so it’s completely representative of this era of film at this point. There really isn’t much room for anything else. That’s my problem.”

Associate director Martin Scorsese has also been a vocal critic of Marvel, calling them out “Theme Park” and “Not a Movie”That prompted a response from several actors and directors working for the studio, including Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who dismissed Scorsese’s comments, saying: “I think it’s not true. I think it’s unfortunate.”

On Wednesday, Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld called Tarantino’s comments “the hottest of hot takes,” while Marvel star Liu Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsTarantino rejected the assessment and praised Marvel’s efforts to improve diversity on screen.

“If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have gotten the chance to lead a $400 million plus movie. I’m in awe of their filmmaking talent. They’re phenomenal writers. But they can’t turn their noses at me or anyone.” he tweeted.

“No movie studio is perfect or ever will be. But I’m proud to work with someone who is constantly striving to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes who empower and inspire people of all walks of life everywhere. I loved the ‘Golden Age’ too… but it was white as hell.”

Earlier this month, Tarantino said he would never direct a Marvel movie because “you have to be a hired hand to do these things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.”
