Ricky Gervais pokes fun at trans people in new Netflix special ‘SuperNature’
Four minutes into the special, Gervais dives into information about the trans community seemingly designed to stir up controversy.
“Ah, women! ” It starts. “Not all women, I mean the most old-fashioned ones. The old-fashioned women, the ones with bellies. Those fucking dinosaurs. I like new women. They are awesome, aren’t they? The new ones we’ve seen lately. Those with beards and dicks. They are as good as gold, I love them. And now the old-fashioned say, ‘Oh, they want to use our toilets.’ “Why wouldn’t they use your toilet?” ‘For ladies!’ ‘They are Ladies, look at their pronouns! What about this person who is not a woman? “Well, his penis.” ‘His penis, you fucking bigot!’ “And if he rapes me? ” ‘What if she rape you, fucking fucking TERF? »
TERF, or Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist, has been associated with people who reject the idea that trans women are women.
A few minutes later, discussing Kevin Hart withdraw from hosting the Oscars in 2018 for past homophobic tweets, Gervais continued to joke about the trans community.
“You can’t predict what will be offensive in the future,” Gervais said. “You don’t know who the dominant crowd will be. For example, the worst thing you can say today, get canceled on Twitter, death threats, the worst thing you can say today is, “Women don’t have penises”, don’t is this not ? Now, no one saw that coming. You won’t find a decade old tweet saying “Women don’t have penises”. You know why? We didn’t think we had to fucking do it!
Towards the end of the special, Gervais offers his reasoning for trans jokes, saying, “Full disclosure: In real life, of course, I support trans rights. I support all human rights, and trans rights are human rights. Live your best life. Use your favorite pronouns. Be the type you feel you are. But meet me halfway, ladies. Lose the dick. That’s all I’m saying.
Amid dozens of right-wing fans and members taking to Twitter to defend Gervais’ set against dissent, trans allies urged followers not to watch the special:
Ricky Gervais has a new stand-up show on Netflix today.
5 minutes later, he’s making jokes about trans women attacking and raping people in public restrooms. For him, we only exist as a punchline, a threat, something less than human.

Ricky Gervais is a disgrace, he will cause hate crimes and ultimately the death of trans people. Anyone who needs to vilify minorities for a laugh is the meanest, most hateful soul and is in serious need of mental help https://t.co/0odAuWMUWp

if you are a comedian and support trans people, it is your responsibility to speak out dave chapel and the new special ricky gervais. at this point, you cannot call yourself an ally unless you publicly object. it’s the bare minimum.

It’s getting worse and worse this year. Parliament had MPs discussing ‘the trans issue’ yesterday. Their words!
And today, there is Ricky Gervais.
Trans people will end up getting killed for this. We need international help. A lifeline. Anything.

Ricky Gervais could go after governments, banks, billionaires. Those who cause real harm to ordinary people everywhere on an unfathomable scale every day.
But he rather attacks trans people. Yeah Ricky, son, you speak your truth to power. Cowardly.

Ricky Gervais does a set on trans people.
What audacity. What a novel. How heroic!
Comedy that really makes you think!
It reminded me of a man called Barry who sits in a pub in Hyde sipping a John Smiths all day, reading the Mail, doing similar gags and complaining about immigrants.

Throughout the special, Gervais also lamented the “cancel culture” for comedians and actors like Louis CK, Liam Neeson and Hart – all of whom still have lucrative careers in showbusiness.
Netflix sparked controversy last year after releasing Chappelle’s stand-up special “The Closer,” which was filled with transphobic material and inspired an employee a walkout to the banner.
