Opinion Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and the Reality of Imperfection

By most measures, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are remarkable women. Intelligent and capable, they succeed through innate talent, hard and sustained work, ambition and vision. Both are like mega pop stars who inspire fits of affection and tears. The crowd swelled and attended to their presence. They’re imbued with a glow that seems almost exclusive to celebrities, so glowing with skin that it needs no filter.

But they are not perfect. Or, importantly, they don’t pretend to. A recent Apple TV+ documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me,” offers an unflinching portrait of Gomez, now 30, and her experiences with bipolar disorder, lupus, anxiety and psychosis. On her latest album, “Midnights,” Taylor Swift, 32, sings about her depression while moving through a cemetery, ending in crisis. “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me / It’s me, hi, everybody agrees, everybody agrees,” goes the song “Anti-Hero.” “Sometimes I feel like everyone’s a sexy baby / And I’m a monster.”

This combination of outward flawlessness and emotional vulnerability feels like a characteristic characteristic of contemporary female pop stars. On a screen we see impeccably glam, expertly choreographed and costumed performances and stunning displays of luxury. On another screen, admissions for anxiety, PTSD, panic attacks and insomnia.

Does this mean that many of today’s female pop stars are not just Gomez and Swift? Adele, Lady Gaga And Ariana Grande, openly reveal their struggles with anxiety, depression and panic attacks? Megan wrote a song called The Stallion “concern” And create a dedicated website Mental health. Even Rihanna, the paragon of cool confidence, admits occasional anxiety. Many stars have admitted in posts and interviews that intense public scrutiny — followers, reactions, manufactured outrage, criticism, haters — has gotten to them.
