World No. 3 Cameron Smith is among a tie at six for the lead after the first round of the Memorial Tournament in Ohio.

The Australian shared seven birdies with two bogeys en route to a five under 67, which he shares with Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, South Korean KH Lee and the American trio of Cameron Young, Luke List and Davis Riley.

The first round at Muirfield Village Golf Club was fruitful for the players, with just two shots separating the top 20 players.

Irishman Shane Lowry bounced back from a slow start with four birdies on the back nine to sit amid the deadlock on 69.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and England’s Luke Donald fought through inconsistencies to finish their opening rounds at two under par.

“I had to do some good pars on that back nine – for me, the front nine,” Smith said. “It was just good to hang in there, get a few birdies, see a few putts go in. I think that’s about as easy as this place is going to get today.

“I think it’s going to be a lot of stressful golf and a lot of grinding over the weekend. It’s good to take the box there at the start of the week.”
