Jos Verstappen, the father of F1 world champion Max, has criticized Red Bull’s strategy at the Monaco GP, insisting valuable points were “thrown away” because they favored eventual winner Sergio Perez.

Verstappen finished third in Sunday’s race as teammate Perez took his first win of the season, with both drivers then hailing Red Bull for outmaneuvering Ferrari with their pit strategy.

But Jos, who made 107 F1 starts before retiring in 2003, believes Perez was wrongly prioritized by the team given his son’s title lead.

“Red Bull achieved a good result, but at the same time exerted little leverage to help Max go forward,” Jos wrote in a column on Max’s official website.

“That he finished third was down to Ferrari’s mistake in that second stop by Charles Leclerc.

“Max was not helped by the chosen strategy. It turned completely in favor of Checo. It disappointed me, and I wish it had been different for the championship leader.”

Perez moved from third on the grid to first in the Principality after Red Bull, the Mexican having overqualified Verstappen, opted to put him first on the intermediates, allowing him to undermine Leclerc and eventually Sainz. Verstappen would follow him, although he is far behind Sainz on the right track.

Verstappen has further extended his championship advantage over Leclerc to nine points, but is only 15 points clear of Perez.

“Perez actually won the race because of the previous pit stop,” Jos insisted. “The team can maybe explain this as a bet, but they had already seen, with for example Gasly, that the intermediaries were the best option at that time.

“I wish they had gone for Max, but of course I’m not entirely objective.”

He added: “I think 10 points from Max have been lost here. Especially with the two retirements we had, we need every point. Don’t forget Ferrari have a better car right now, especially in qualifying. “

Jos also pointed out that Red Bull’s car didn’t suit Max’s style.

“Max’s third place was very disappointing,” he said. “We all saw that it was a difficult weekend for him.

“It starts with the car, which just doesn’t have the characteristics of his driving style yet. Max has way too little grip on the front end. car spinning very fast. It was just difficult.
