It was a night of surprises at the 2022 BAFTA TV Awards, with some of the top favorites missing out on honors as the ceremony saw statuettes handed out to a wide range of winners.

That being said, Kill Eve star Jodie Comer reportedly claimed her second BAFTA lead actress, this time for To helpthe drama written by Jack Thorne about the crisis in British care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help won two awards, as did Jimmy McGovern’s prison series Weatherwhich saw Sean Bean win Best Leading Actor.

Among the major upheavals was It’s a sin, Russell T. Davies’ acclaimed series on the AIDS epidemic, which entered the evening with six nominations, including five in the performance categories, but came away empty-handed. Not that Davies is likely to be upset, the comeback Doctor Who showrunner who was able to proudly present his new Time Lord, Sex education‘s Ncuti Gatwa, which was announced hours before the ceremony, on the red carpet.

Sex education also left without gongs, missing out on both of his nominations, as did We are Lady Parts. Instead, the wins were spread across the board, with shows including Mother land, Alma is not normal and Stath rents apartments pick up the wins.

Steve McQueen, who missed out on a BAFTA for his acclaimed series small ax in 2021, claimed an award for the doc series Uprising which he made alongside James Rogan.

In a highly politicized ceremony, many speeches saw the winners lend their support to public service broadcasters, in particular Channel 4, which the UK government is currently and controversially considering privatising.

“The BBC and Channel 4 are bringing us together,” McQueen said on stage. “We have to hold on and fight for every inch.”

Meanwhile, writer Dennis Kelly, who won the only drama award for Wholeread a damning statement from COVID-19 Survivors Group UK attacking the government’s response during the pandemic.

During the evening, Billy Connelly also received the BAFTA Fellowship, the British Academy’s highest honour. In an upbeat recorded acceptance video, the Scottish icon opened up about his 50 years in comedy, but also noted that he was “severely” suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
