New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is missing the second test against England at Trent Bridge after testing positive for Covid-19 the day before the game.

Williamson undertook a rapid antigen test (RAT) after experiencing minor symptoms on Thursday and will now begin five days in self-isolation, New Zealand said in a statement.

The rest of the tour returned negative tests.

Hamish Rutherford will join the squad on Friday morning replacing Williamson, with Tom Latham as captain.

“It’s such a shame for Kane to be forced to forfeit on the eve of such an important game,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

“We all feel for him right now and know how disappointed he will be.

“Hamish was with the test team earlier in the tour and played for Leicestershire Foxes in the Vitality T20 Blast.”

Speaking before returning a positive Covid-19 test, New Williamson said his side were looking to improve their individual performance at Trent Bridge.

England unchanged | Leach succeeded, Stokes ‘good’ to bowl

England named an unchanged XI for the second Test, with Jack Leach going fit after a concussion and Stokes declaring he was “fine” for bowling.

Left-arm spinner Leach was pulled out six overs in the first Test at Lord’s after taking a heavy fall on the boundary. His mandatory seven-day rest period ended on Thursday and he participated fully in England’s training session.

Stokes, who appeared to polish his squad during bowling practices on Wednesday, also guaranteed his fitness for the Trent Bridge Test, confirming he will play a role with both bat and ball.

“Everything is fine this morning,” Stokes said when asked about his fitness on Thursday. “Just a little stiff.”

He added that it was more of a precautionary measure than anything else, saying sky sports“It’s probably just to be more sensible around training and stuff like that.

“Because obviously once you go out and cross that line you want to do whatever you can to help win a game for England.”

As for Leach, Stokes described his recall to the XI as a “simple” decision, once he proved his suitability.

“It’s quite unfortunate what happened to Leachy last week at Lord’s, but he recovered well this week and it was pretty straightforward once we got the good news that he was fit to play.” , did he declare.
