How great! John Lennon’s son Julian (left) took to Twitter on Saturday after bumping into his late father’s Beatles bandmate Sir Paul McCartney (right) in an airport lounge.

Earlier this year, Julian spoke of how difficult it was to watch his father’s posthumous Glastonbury performance with former bandmate Sir Paul.

John was brought back to life by the magic of video and artificial intelligence to perform a duet of the 1969 track ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’ with Sir Paul, who delivered a stunning three-hour set at the summer festival in June.

The impressive stunt was the brainchild of Beatles documentary Get Back film-maker Peter Jackson, who used machine learning technology to isolate Lennon’s vocals from decades-old recordings and arrange them to recreate a live performance.

‘I saw it on YouTube – and I kind of went: ‘Err. . . I don’t know if I’m comfortable with it.” It shocked me,” his son said mojo magazine

Julian, whose mother was Lennon’s first wife Cynthia, was 17 when her father was shot dead in December 1980.

He added that it was initially difficult to see his late father ‘brought to life’ to perform with his old Beatles bandmates – a stunt which Macca pulled off for the first time during the opening concert of his world tour in the US in April.

Julian couldn’t bring himself to watch the initial performance, unsure of how he would take watching a video of his dead father projected on a giant screen while hearing a highly accurate rendition of his soft, melodious voice.

But after two months had passed since the US concert when Glasto was touring in late June, Julian decided to bite the bullet and see Sir Paul perform in the English countryside.

‘I actually enjoyed it,’ he said, adding that he had finally made peace with the idea of playing his father on a big screen.

Sir Paul became the oldest headliner at the Eligible Farm Festival, playing a week after his 80th birthday.

His massive set included performances with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen, as well as a Lennon duet that wowed the capacity crowd.

Meanwhile Jackson, who directed The Lord of the Rings, discussed how he was able to use modern technology to facilitate Lennon’s posthumous performance – though was reluctant to divulge many details.

‘We built a machine learning system that taught us what a guitar sounds like, what a bass sounds like, what a voice sounds like,’ said the New Zealander.

‘In fact, we taught the computer what John sounded like and what Paul sounded like.’

Jackson is believed to have used the same technique and custom-made artificial intelligence to create the Get Back documentary on The Beatles, separating background sounds, instruments and speech from the original mono recording, enabling editors to use footage that was otherwise unusable.

After the heartfelt duet at Glastonbury, which was widely praised by fans, Sir Paul admitted: ‘It’s very special to me. I know it’s virtual. There I am singing with John again, we’re together again.’
