Jiri Prochazka Relinquishes Title, Out of UFC 282; Magomed Anklayev vs Jan Blachovich for the vacant belt

“Out of respect for the athlete and the division, Prochazka has elected to vacate his title and will compete for the belt as soon as he is medically cleared,” the UFC said in a prepared statement sent to MMA Fighting.

According to ESPN.com, recovery may take up to a year depending on the nature of the injury. A person close to Prochazka, who declined to be named publicly due to the sensitivity of the fighter’s situation, confirmed that the injury was now in the former champ’s shoulder. The person said the injury will require surgery and added it will “unfortunately be a long road.”

MMA Fighting was not immediately able to reach Teixeira for comment on the shakeup.

The alleged former light heavyweight champ was set to make his first title defense in a “Fight of the Year” candidate rematch against former champ Teixeira, who was defeated via fifth-round submission in their first meeting. Slugfest in June UFC 275.

The Blachovich vs. Anklaev match puts the winner in prime position to fight for the title. Blachovich, who handed the belt to Teixeira in 2021, called out Prochazka shortly after the Czech fighter won the title. But the new champ decided to go back to his fight with Teixeira instead, looking to rectify what he felt was the worst performance of his career.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka has suffered a shoulder injury that will require a significant rehabilitation period. Out of respect for the athlete and the division, Prochazka has elected to vacate his title and will compete for the belt as soon as he is medically cleared.

As a result, the new UFC 282 main event will see former champion and No. 2-ranked Jan Blachovich take on No. 3-ranked Magomed Anklaev for the vacant, undisputed UFC light heavyweight championship.

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with legendary knockout power, Blachovich has finished four of his last six victories in emphatic fashion and looks to reclaim his lost crown with another signature victory. Anklayev is currently riding the second-longest winning streak in UFC light heavyweight history, which includes nine wins including five finishes, and plans to extend his streak by claiming his first UFC title.

Due to changes to the original event, refunds will be available at the point of sale. UFC 282: BLACHOWICZ vs. ANKALAEV takes place on Saturday, December 10 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
