Screen Rant: Jeff, congratulations on Sonic 2 becoming the highest-grossing video game movie of all time.

Jeff Fowler: Thank you! Yeah, that’s great. Woo-hoo!

What is it about Sonic that makes it so successful where other video game movies have failed?

Jeff Fowler: He’s just such a nice little guy. He’s so upbeat, fun and energetic, but he’s also very loyal to his friends. He believes in family. He has a huge heart. I mean, there are so many likable traits that are only amplified by what Ben [Schwartz] brings to the character and his performance. There is so much positivity. He’s overflowing with joy, and I feel like that makes for such a great character.

Colleen, how does it feel to be there sole player in video games resume your role in the cinema?

Colleen O’Shaughnessey: It’s pretty amazing. It’s just phenomenal. This whole trip, I feel like Cinderella. (laughs) It was really fantastic.

Was there anything different involved in Tails’ expression for a live action movie?

Colleen O’Shaughnessey: I think the biggest difference is in the circumstances that Tails finds himself in. It is at the start of a relationship as opposed to something that is already established. The stakes are a bit higher. It might be more grounded performance than video game, that’s for sure.

Jeff, you have an amazing cast. Not just the voice actors, but also the live people. When you’re directing someone like Idris Elba who’s known as a great dramatic actor, how do you get a “lively” vocal performance, so to speak?

Jeff Fowler: Not much. He wanted to have fun. He knew what we were looking for with Knuckles, that kind of A fish out of water. Knuckles is on Earth, he’s never been there before, he doesn’t understand anything. He’s very serious, very stoic, but there’s a lot of humor in there because of these misinterpretations and misunderstandings. He was always cracking jokes or looking for ways to have a little fun. Which is great because, at the end of the day, these movies are fun first and foremost.

Colleen O’Shaughnessey: I like the voice translator. The language translator.

Jeff Fowler: It didn’t even work!

Colleen O’Shaughnessey: It didn’t work! But I liked it anyway. I actually liked all the gadgets that were in the backpack that the ladies were able to use.

Jeff Fowler: Yes. The old boomerang.

Colleen O’Shaughnessey: Because it was awesome. “I didn’t mean to do that!” [laughs]

Jeff, what’s your favorite gadget?

Jeff Fowler: The holographic stuff was fun. Obviously we used it in multiple ways, but just [because of] Tails being able to create little look-alikes of himself. It’s just a fun visual. I think it really helped us improve our fun dance scene at the tavern.

Jim Carrey is as awesome as Robotnik. It’s one of my favorite performances. How does it feel to dispute it?

Jeff Fowler: I’m not making any attempt! Why would you argue with Jim Carrey? You just let him go! He is having so much fun playing this character. He really likes Robotnik. He loves making him this charming villain, this literal mustache-twirling villain. He brings so many good ideas, so many hilarious ideas to implement every day. It’s just absolute bliss.

We had so much fun on these two movies. But I think Sonic 2 [and] getting to do the iconic Robotik visual – the bald head, the crazy big mustache, all that – Jim was so excited and happy that we were able to do it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Knuckles Robotnik

Do you think Jim Carrey really going to retire? I hope not.

Jeff Fowler: I wouldn’t even begin to speculate. I’ll call him every day and beg him not to if that’s what it takes.

I will too.

Colleen O’Shaughnessey: We’ll all keep calling.

Sonic met Tails and met Knuckles. Whether you can Multiverse of Madness Sonic and having him meet any character from any franchise, who would it be?

Jeff Fowler: There’s fan art that brings Spider-Man and Sonic together. I thought those two would be pretty awesome. Peter Parker talks fast, sort of [vibe]. They have very similar backstories, so I think a Sonic and Spider-Man moment would be fun.

It would be quite natural, you’re right. Also, we have to talk about the end of Sonic 2 and tease for Shadow the Hedgehog. What can you tell us about what’s happening with Shadow?

Jeff Fowler: Absolutely nothing. [laughs] I’m afraid that’s all we got is that scene. We were just focused, obviously, on making the second movie and looking good. And then, fingers crossed, the rest will come together.
