Hansi Flick has omitted Robin Goossens from Germany’s World Cup squad

Inter MilanIts Robin Gossen was not called the former Bayern Munich Germany’s World Cup team manager Hansi Flick. Flick said Gossen’s lack of presence over the past year and subsequent lack of rhythm were factors behind the decision.

Flick made it clear that he did not doubt Gossen’s qualities — a lack of playing time at Milan led Flick to prefer David Raum and Christian Gunter in Gossen’s left-back role. Both Raum and Gunter have been regulars at RB Leipzig and SC Freiburg respectively this season, so the decision comes as no surprise.

Another reason why this decision makes sense is that Raum and Gunter are more comfortable playing in the back-four than Goossens. Hansi Flick seems to prefer a 4231 formation so Goossens would probably be a redundant member of the squad. Moreover, even with a three-back system, Raum is particularly a specialist in this left wing-back role which means that Goossens’ exclusion may be justified.
