Daniil Medvedev entered the French Open third round with a 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over Serbian Laslo Djere.

The world number 2, who reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year after four straight first-round exits, struggled at times but found a way to cross the line on the surface he admitted n not be his favorite.

Medvedev won 70% of the points after his first serve and was able to capitalize on the high number of unforced errors produced by his opponent during the two-and-a-half-hour match.

He will next meet 28th seed Miomir Kecmanovic, who defeated Alexander Bublik in four sets 4-6 7-5 6-2 6-1.

“Today, I think to be honest, Laslo was playing the best tennis on clay,” Medvedev said during his on-court interview.

“But I managed to fight back and put one ball more than him in the field. It was a very difficult match, but I’m happy to have won.

“Honestly, I think I played better in the first round,” he said. “I absolutely have to play better in the next round, because it will be more and more difficult. Again, I’m not going to lie, I prefer hard courts.”

“It was definitely a challenge,” Ruud said of his match against Ruusuvuori.

“Even though it was three straight sets, there were tough moments and chances that I didn’t have, but I had others. Overall, I’m very happy with the performance .”

Holger Rune, who beat 14th seed Denis Shapovalov in the first round, defeated Henri Laaksonen 6-2 6-3 6-3. The 19-year-old is making his Paris debut and reached the semi-finals in Lyon last week.
