Falcons’ Kyle Pitts will miss time; Surgery is likely, per the source
A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Petes has surgery for his MCL injury “likely,” but Smith said nothing has been confirmed as they are still seeing doctors and getting opinions on the potential tear and its severity.
“I’m not a doctor, but with an MCL sprain, that’s usually what happens — there are varying degrees and where they are in the knee,” Smith said. “I’ll let the medical experts handle that.”
Pitts suffered a knee injury in the third quarter against Sunday Chicago When at the end of a catch and run Eddie Jackson Handled him just above the knee. Pitts was first on the ground and then quickly left the field. He then made his way to the blue medical tent before slowly walking towards the locker room.
Smith said it has not yet been decided whether they will place Pitts or Graham on injured reserve. Pitts, the No. 4 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has been playing through “a lot” this season, Smith said, including a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the Week 5 game against Atlanta. Tampa Bay.
“He’s had such a big impact on this team,” Smith said. “I know the numbers aren’t as decent as they were as a rookie and he’s been playing a lot, and he’s a tough guy and he’s made a huge impact.”
Coming off a 1,000-yard rookie season as a tight end — the second 1,000-yard season for a rookie tight end in NFL history — Pitts began playing in a different offense asking him to do different things.
He’s become a complete player at his position, particularly focusing on improving his blocking in the offseason, and Smith has said multiple times that he’s happy with what the Pitts have done in 2022. , 68 catches off the pace, 1,026 yards and a touchdown he had as a rookie.
Smith pointed to the plays Pitts made outside of last year compared to the time this season where he couldn’t open the mouth at the same pace as part of what he mentioned when talking about what Pitts was playing in 2022.
But he made it clear how big a part Pitts is of Atlanta’s offense.
“People just look at the stats, and his impact on winning was huge for us,” Smith said. “Obviously there were times we weren’t consistent and the way we played there were times where you had to sacrifice some passing numbers.
“The guy’s a great teammate. He’s not as vocal as a lot of people because he’s a real person and that’s why we love him. He’s a real teammate and the future is really bright for him and that’s why we’re so excited to have him in this organization.”
The Falcons could be looking at a combination of tight ends Parker laughed, Michael Pruitt, Anthony Firkser And Felipe Frankswho is dealing with a calf injury, to replace what Pitts did while out in Atlanta.
Graham, who has started nine of 11 games this season for the Falcons Grady JarrettHas 34 tackles, eight quarterback hits and one fumble recovery so far this season.
“Just fundamentally, the way he’s taking blocks, the little things, the tactical things that matter in the run game,” Smith said earlier this season of Graham’s impact. “Not bending, not guessing, that’s what it comes down to — leverage, fundamentals, being able to play good combination blocks. He’s doing it really well.”
Graham was held off the field in the second quarter Sunday.
