Deepika Padukone says she gets ‘goosebumps’ as she sits on Cannes 2022 jury: ‘Maybe I’m not giving myself enough credit’
Actor Deepika Padukone is having a really good time as a jury member at Cannes 2022. The actor has been a regular on the prestigious film festival’s red carpet since 2017, but this year is truly special. “The festival management seems so convinced of why they made this decision,” Deepika told Variety in an interview about her participation on the Cannes jury. “It makes me sit and think sometimes that maybe I didn’t credit myself enough. And that’s also okay, because, I don’t want to feel like, like this huge achievement or anything. If I landed here today, without even realizing it, I must be doing something right. And so, I don’t want to think too much about what brought me here.
The actress said she wants India to make the news beyond red carpet look at Cannes. The actor is part of the Cannes jury alongside actor-filmmaker Rebecca Hall, Noomi Rapace and Italian actor-director Jasmine Trinca, as well as directors Asghar Farhadi, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols and Joachim Trier. The jury will decide which film will win the Palme d’Or.
Speaking from her own experience as a former model, she said: “Models have always been seen as people who are incapable of acting, whether you are a model or an actor, and the two things in people’s minds cannot not co-exist. So from the beginning of my journey like that, to my beginnings, and now 15 years later, to having evolved as a person, in a professional capacity and in a personal capacity, I have learned from each experience .
She has shared a new set of photos in which she is dressed in green and white polka dot ensembles.
The actor was seen at the inauguration of the Indian Pavilion in Cannes on the second day of the film festival. Dressed in a black pantsuit and statement necklace, the actor spoke about Indian cinema and how the country will get better and better in the years to come.
On the first day of the festival, Deepika wore a black and gold saree with sequins, designed by Sabyasachi. She completed her look with a golden headband and kohl eyes, and wore long earrings. She shared photos on her Instagram page and wrote, “The saree is a story I will never stop telling. It doesn’t matter where we are in the world, it belongs,” said Sabyasachi Mukherjee…and I totally agree! She also wore a red Louis Vuitton dress with barely there straps and a statement necklace.
Speaking to PTI recently, Deepika said she hopes this time people will talk more about Indian cinema and less about fashion. “I hope we realize there’s so much more… Of course fashion is fun, it should be fun. And it’s also something very personal. But I hope the Indian media has learned from this latest experience and realizes that we have the power to really change this narrative and talk about the great moment this is for India. I think we should talk about celebrating India. The celebration of Indian talent and cinema,” she said.
This year, the Cannes Film Festival celebrates Indian cinema. India has been chosen as the first “country of honor” of the Cinema Market. On the opening day, an Indian delegation, led by I&B Minister Anurag Thakur, walked the red carpet. The delegation includes AR Rahman, Pooja Hegde, Shekhar Kapur among others. Besides Deepika, several other Bollywood actors are present at the Cannes Film Festival, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Hina Khan and Urvashi Rautela.
