Cannes Film Festival: Celebrities gather at the film festival for the first time since COVID in tribute to Tom Cruise | Ents & Arts News

Stars from around the world have taken to the red carpet ahead of the premieres of upcoming films which will take place over the next 10 days at the Cannes Film Festival.

Actor Tom Cruise made a whirlwind appearance after 30 years and received a surprise honorary Palme d’Or.

The 59-year-old made it to the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick where all the stops were taken from rare on-stage interviews, a red carpet with a jet flyover and of course his honorary presentation.

The prize was awarded by Pierre Lescure, president of the festival just before the start of the screening.

The Cannes Film Festival returned for the first time since the COVID pandemic, and stars from around the world took to the red carpet ahead of the premieres of upcoming films and documentaries.

The 75th annual film festival runs from May 17-28 and features premieres of films and documentaries from around the world.

Zombie comedy Final Cut led the screening as the film chosen to open the ceremony.

The festival opened with a video message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who appeared as a special guest.

Stars such as Bollywood icon Deepika Padukone, Lashana Lynch, Tallia Storm, Rebecca Hall, Eva Longoria and Katherine Langford stepped out in their glamorous dresses for the occasion.

The actress was joined by co-stars Romain Duris, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Lutz and director Michel Hazanavicius.

The invitation-only event, which was previously known as the International Film Festival until 2003, is held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

The Final Cut film was renamed from the original “Coupz”, after Ukrainian protesters pointed out that the letter Z represents support for Russia in the war against Ukraine.
