Arsen Goulamirian eyes Richard Riakporhe in world heavyweight title fight as Londoner prepares for Fabio Turchi eliminator | boxing news
WBA heavyweight champion Arsen Goulamirian has hosted a world title showdown with Richard Riakporhe if ‘The Midnight Train’ prevails in Saturday’s fight against Italy’s Fabio Turchi at Wembley Arena.
Riakporhe extended his unbeaten record to 14-0 after an eighth-round stoppage of Deion Jumah in March and he will next face Turchi in this weekend’s IBF eliminator, live on Sky Sports.
But a WBA title fight has emerged as another potential route for Riakporhe, with Goulamirian promoter Yohan Zaoui underscoring the French fighter’s interest in taking on the 32-year-old.
“Goulamirian against Riakporhe would be a very exciting fight for the French and English fans,” said Zaoui.
“A pure destroyer against a big puncher, both undefeated fighting for the world title, success guaranteed. If Sky Sports and Ben Shalom think like me, then let’s go, I like it.”
Goulamirian, who hasn’t defended his title since December 2019, remains set to face mandatory challenger Aleksei Egorov, despite complications surrounding the fight due to sports sanctions against Russian athletes.
The pair were due to meet late last year only for the fight to be called off due to Goulamirian testing positive for COVID-19, but Zaoui hopes to finalize a new date in the coming weeks.
Speaking last month, Shalom revealed Riakporhe’s world title options could even include WBC champion Ilunga Makabu.
Makabu is 29-2 after picking up a split decision win over Thabiso Mchunu to retain his title in January, with the most recent loss of his career coming by third-round knockout to Tony Bellew in March 2016.
“Were very close [to a world title]. We promised him, he was the first fighter to join us, that ‘we’re going to give you this world title,'” Shalom said. sky sports.
“He stepped up every time, he did really well against Deion Jumah.
“Now he’s fighting Turchi who will be looking to undo the power we know Richard is fighting with, it’s going to be an intriguing fight. If he’s successful a world title fight will 100% be next.
“There are three options for him. We love the Makabu fight, we think it’s a perfect fight for Richard, a lot of other heavyweights are doing it too.
“We think he’s ready, he’s 32 now, he’s going to face Turchi. If he’s successful, we want to see that.
“Then we will hopefully have two world heavyweight champions [alongside Lawrence Okolie] in this country and it’s a great moment for the cruiserweight division.”
Watch Richard Riakporhe vs. Fabio Turchi live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action from 7pm Saturday.
Olympic gold medalist Lauren Price MBE will also make her professional debut on the card.
